3 Tips on How To AirBnB While Black

Let me start by saying, these tips have worked for me in the past. Nothing is full proof but I hope this helps someone.  Enjoy!

1. Look For A Home Away From Home

In this instance, home has less to do with decor and more to do with feeling. When choosing a neighborhood, pick a place where you would feel comfortable staying but that is also likely to be welcoming to people who look like you. I'm not sure about you but I refuse to go anywhere that I'm not wanted or welcomed. Questions that you should ask yourself include: "Is this neighborhood diverse?" and "Is it safe?". Statistics and forums can be found online on just about any neighborhood.

2. Read the Reviews

I know, I know. You're probably rolling your eyes thinking that this is common sense. What I've learned over the years is that common sense, ain't so common. Once you have a few places on your list in your desired neighborhood, read the reviews about the host(s). See if there were any other Black people or people of color that had the opportunity to stay there. This gives me an idea of whether the host is welcoming to my people and if they are, how might those guests be treated.

3. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!

Before attempting to book a room or apartment, reach out to the host. Give them some info about yourself, some of the things you'll be doing while in town, some of your coming and going habits etc. Ask them things that you should know about that aren't written in the listing. This gives YOU the power to feel them out even more in an attempt to decide if their space will be right for you.

Although I know the issue itself is larger, I just remind myself that I wouldn't want to patronize someone that doesn't like me or my people. If someone declines to rent to me on the basis of my skin color alone, they've done me a favor. I've been denied before, for reasons unknown to me. It all turned out for the best because the places I landed, were better fits for me! I'd love to know your thoughts surrounding this issue and if you found the tips helpful. Leave your comments below and don't forget to hit one of the share buttons!
